ex Peter Pollack, NY, USA (1909–1978)

Wood, pigment, beads, string

A very old figure with fluid, honest carving and a wonderful expression, bearing a deep patina shaped by significant handling. Traces of the original blackened surface remain in places, though it has been worn away across much of the figure, resulting in an unusual and compelling coloration. This figure comes from the collection of Peter Pollack, a New York–based photographer, curator, and historian best known for his book The Picture History of Photography (1958). He was an active collector from the 1950s through the 1970s, and is also notable for his later publication Understanding Primitive Art: Sula’s Zoo (1972).
