|PUNU OKUYI MASK, GABON
11.5” tall x 5” wide
ex Fily Keita, CA
ex private collection, France
2nd quarter 20th century
A nice and honest Punu mask which is most
likely from the period around the 40's.
There's a wide range of aesthetics in Punu
masks from the very beautiful to the
somewhat crude and ugly. I guess it's all in
the eye of the beholder. I personally find this
mask attractive and enjoy the orangish
pigment on the lips and forehead. The mask
probably wasn't used a lot, and there is
always the possibility it was sold to an
outsider before it was used much. It does
have a hole on the inside in the center. It's
not the greatest Punu, but it's honest and I'm
pricing it at a point I think is fair for its quality.
