Oyo ibeji figure
11" / 27.9 cm tall
wood, pigment
Oyo area between Oshogbo or Ifon
ex collection of W. Gordon Menzies, Seattle

I especially like the unique marks around
the eyes and the arch of the arms and
shoulders tapering into the hands on both

I am not very good with the specific
attribution of Ibeji figures so I asked Bradley
Reiman who is extremely knowledgeable
and he stated: “Shaki looking with
scarification seen in Ede and Oyo.
Okitipupa is a town on Eastern side of
Ijebuland so far Eastern Yoruba. Interesting
that the town it was collected in is listed
because it shows that these moved around
quite a bit. People moved like we do!”
