| Zulu or Swazi knobkerrie, South Africa 19.5" tall wood, pigment late 19th - early 20th century ex private collection, US $1700 This is an exceptional example of this type of knobkerrie. It has a wonderfully worn honey-colored patina and is scalloped on top and underneath the knob. Objects like this were generally used as dance staffs. The top of the scalloped knob was often times filled with animal fat that would have been applied to the wearers face. This example has very nice detail to the back portion of the knob where it meets the handle. It is also very well balanced and can stand on its own when placed upside down on the scalloped top portion of the knob. |
