Yoruba couple, Igbuke, Oyo region, Nigeria
wood, pigment, traces on indigo blue
male 9.5" tall, female 9" tall
late 19th / early 20th century
$1300
While a majority of Yoruba figural sculpture in this style
represents Ibeji figures, depicting a deceased twin
child, these figures were most likely used on an altar
and represented a married couple with a child.
The male figure has an old, stabilized crack down the back while the
mother has an old, stabilized crack on the left hand side of her body.
