Ancestor figure (Itara), Timor, Atauro Island
wood and pigment
early 20th century
ex Jack Sadovic
Wooden sculpture of the Atauro Island consists primarily of ancestor images (itara) which are carved in male/female
pairs. Itara portray distant ancestral couples, the founders of specific families and lineages. When in use, each figure
is clad in garmets appropriate to its sex. The figures are kept within the house of the lineage chief. This particular
figure is part of a pair. The male figure is in a private US collection.
