Nyamwezi couple, Tanzania
male 16.5" tall, femal 16" tall
wood, beads, pigment

$2500 for the pair

An exceptionally nice matched couple from Tanzania. I
acquired these figures from two different galleries in
different years. It is obvious they were carved by the
same hand and most likely were originally carved to be
displayed together.

I especially love the movement in the carving of the
female figure with the upper torso and head turned
slightly to the right. The pose with the arms behind the
back, as seen in these figures, is often times a
traditional gesture of sorrow or mourning in many
African cultures according to the book
Gestures in
African Art
