Ngombe backrest, Democratic Republic of the Congo
43" long by 23" wide by 20" tall
early to mid 20th century
wood, metal tacks, plant fiber
ex private Belgian collection
ex Jo De Buck

$900

Backrests such as this were made by several different cultures including the Mangbetu, Boa and Ngombe in the
Congo in the early 20th century. This is an early example with extensive use and wear. The top of the back support
was previously broken and had indigenous repair which is quite strong, but I wouldn't suggest trying to use this
object like it was originally intended.

It is a very large object and I am not going to attempt to ship it internationally due to size restrictions and cost. I will
only offer it in the US. Jo De Buck brought this object over to the US with him in a crate with other objects he was
going to show at the San Francisco Tribal and Textile Arts Show and I shipped it to myself in Denver at a cost of
about $200.

When leaned back on its top the backrest takes on an abstract animal form.
