Lozi bowl (mikeke), Zambia
11" long x 7.5" tall
wood, pigment
definite signs of age and use
From the South African Collection of Pucker Gallery, Boston, MA.
$500
Inventory # SA336
The Lozi are mainly noted for their fine basketry, they normally do not work in wood. Among the best known wooden
objects produced by the Lozi are lidded bowls used for meat and vegetables. The handles of the bowls are often
carved into the forms of animals, in this case a single bird. This finely crafted example has incised marks around the
perimeter of the bowl and sits on a column base which is an unusual and nice feature that has been incorporated
into this bowl.
For a similar example from the Museum Reitberg in Zurich, see p. 166 of "Africa: The Art of a Continent"
