According to Dr. Daniel Mato, figures such as this where the feet are depicted pointing backward and the arms were articulated (now missing), could represent a version of the Akan forest spirit called Sassabosum - a witch who sat or hung from trees and grabbed unwary people as they walked under her tree with her long feet. They were generally something of an 'anti-aesthetic' figure.
