Akan (Asante or Fante) figure, Ghana wood, pigment, traces of kaolin 7.5" tall early to mid 20th century acquired in Paris, France
According to a correspondence I had with Dr. Daniel Mato about this figure, he stated that her head is drawn at a slant and appears to have been rubbed in the same way they used to rub babies foreheads to give them a spatulate look, like the face of the moon he was told. He stated - "I would not be surprised to know that she was at one time something like an Akua Ba figure, we forget that not all Akua Ba are abstracted. Nice face and remnants of body."
